Importing an existing recording and dictating directly into a field are different workflows. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right controls and privacy expectations.
The two voice routes can look similar after text appears, but their processing paths differ.
Use import for an existing file
A short supported recording can be transcribed with OneTap’s downloaded language pack on the device. This path is useful when the speech already exists as a memo. Check the file and its language instead of expecting the app to listen to a different conversation.
Use system dictation deliberately
Live dictation may be provided by the operating system and may use its vendor’s online service. Its permissions and behavior are separate from an imported-file pack. Review the resulting wording in either case; the method of entering words does not verify their meaning.
Know which voice path you chose
Choose your route before you start speaking or selecting files. If the memo was recorded yesterday, open the imported-file workflow and inspect that file’s supported language and duration. If you want to dictate a sentence directly into a field, read the operating system’s current prompt and behavior instead of looking for the imported pack to control it. You may use both routes on one device for different purposes, but keep their privacy expectations distinct. After text appears, review the same fragile details either way. The fact that one route can transcribe a prepared file locally should not be used to describe a separate live dictation service as offline without checking that service’s own settings.
One step at a time.
- 01
Decide whether you already have a recording to import.
- 02
Use voice import for a supported saved audio file.
- 03
Use system dictation only when you intend to speak live.
- 04
Review the text before saving or requesting analysis.
A little reference.
Keep the context and your next action together.
| Choice | Use it for | Check before saving |
|---|---|---|
| Audio import | An existing short recording | Needs its language pack |
| Live dictation | Speech entered now | OS service rules apply |
| Review | Both routes | Check the recognized text |
Does an offline import pack make system dictation offline?
No. System dictation is a separate operating-system facility with its own processing and settings.
