A LITTLE LIFE GUIDE / GUIDE

Protect the encryption key by preserving local access

Understand why a local workspace needs its device-held key.

OneTap encrypts its local workspace and keeps its key in platform secure storage. That protects stored information, but it also means the data depends on access to the correct local key.

THE LITTLE THING TO REMEMBER

Local encryption protects storage; it does not make key loss or careless export handling harmless.

01

Keep storage and export distinct

An encrypted workspace and a JSON export are different forms of the information. The export is plain text and may include saved image previews as base64 data. Store an export privately rather than assuming it inherits the workspace’s encryption simply because OneTap created it.

02

Prepare before removing the app

Export information you need before deleting the app, clearing secure storage or changing the device. Removing the key can make local data unavailable. There is no OneTap account recovery or server synchronization that can be assumed to restore a missing device-local workspace.

03

Distinguish access from availability

Before removing an installation or clearing device storage, confirm that you can still open the current workspace and export the information you need. A file copied from an encrypted storage location is not necessarily useful without its device-held key. Choose a private destination for a deliberate plain JSON export and keep original documents separately when their full files matter. Do not test recovery by deleting the only accessible working copy first. If a future device is involved, inspect its actual supported setup or transfer workflow before removing the old installation. That sequence protects your ability to check the result instead of treating encryption as a promise that every later recovery attempt will succeed.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE

One step at a time.

  1. 01

Review what information you need to retain.

  2. 02

Export important saved data before app or device removal.

  3. 03

Store the plain JSON export in a private location.

  4. 04

Avoid clearing secure storage without understanding the consequence.

ONE MORE QUESTION

Can signing into OneTap recover a lost key?

There is no OneTap sign-in or server workspace sync. Do not assume account recovery can restore inaccessible local data.
