You do not need a language-model download simply to recognize text in a Mac screenshot. Native OCR supplies working text that you can review and organize.
Local text recognition and local language-model interpretation are separate useful capabilities.
Check recognition quality
Open a clear supported image and inspect the recognized wording. Small print, unusual layouts and cropped edges can cause mistakes even when processing stays local. Correct important names, amounts and dates before relying on extracted tasks or a summary.
Decide what to do with the text
For a simple next step, on-device rules or manual editing may be enough. A text model can process the recognized text later if you have configured Mac local AI. That does not make the text model itself an image reader or guarantee it can recover text OCR missed.
Review the result against the source
After local OCR, look specifically at line endings, columns and small numerals. A notice with several dates can be recognized accurately as text while still leaving you to decide which date belongs to the task. Open the source image and match the proposed action to the relevant line instead of trusting the first date in the output. If the image cuts off a sentence, provide a better source or note what is missing. Downloading a text model cannot recover evidence that was absent from the input. Native OCR is a useful local first step precisely when its recognized wording remains a working reading that you are willing to compare with the actual screenshot.
